Threats on the maculinea
Original title: Menaces sur le maculinea
Duration: 26’
Producer: CERIMES
Director: Alain Monclin
Scientific field: Zoology, Εcology
Year: 2002
Country: France

The lifecycle of the Maculinea wetlands butterfly involves other parts of nature, essential for its growth: after starting its life nestling in tall plants, the Maculinea larva falls to the ground, where it is adopted by ants that feed it until it emerges from its chrysalis. This highly unusual form of development involving other partner-species illustrates why conservation biology is so important and why it is essential to preserve eco-systems in their entirely, such as in the Rhône-Alpes region, where protecting plants and partner-species, has enabled the survival of the Maculinea.
