Iceland has become a natural laboratory for measuring the impact of climate change. The island lies on the edge of the polar circle, which makes it more sensitive than any other Arctic region to climatic fluctuations. And Iceland is already grappling with some consequences of global warming—accelerated melting of glaciers, impact on river ecosystems, and rising hydroelectric station reservoirs.
Many researchers see Iceland as a premier barometer: it is experiencing today what many countries will face 25 years down the road.
