Floyd Romesberg is about to make a major breakthrough in genetic research that could change the way we see life itself. The chemist from The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego has just developed synthetic DNA by adding a fifth letter to the genetic alphabet. It consists of a new pair of synthetic nucleotides: fluorobenzenes. If Romesberg manages to create viable synthetic organisms, he’ll be opening the door to a variety of innovative medical and technological applications, but also to the frightening possibility of a new breed of GMO’s and highly virulent pathogens.
