We’re used to hearing claims that we humans are really just apes: and that and amazing
98.6% of our DNA is shared with chimps. But how similar are we in reality? The astonishing
similarities between humans and our nearest “cousins” –the chimps and bonobos, gorillas
and orangutans- are seen in almost every aspect of their lives from their sexual behaviour to
the way they express their thoughts and feelings. In fact, it seems almost everything humans
do; other apes do too - which lead some people to wonder whether humans are so special,
after all... In a series of experiments we compare humans to the great apes, to see what our
ape cousins can do- and what they can’t - and find out just what it is in the 1.4% of DNA that
